Nordschleife Sim Racing Guide for Your First Clean Laps

Your first lap of the Nordschleife in a sim usually ends in the barrier somewhere around Flugplatz, and the second ends in a different barrier a few kilometres further on.

Your first lap of the Nordschleife in a sim usually ends in the barrier somewhere around Flugplatz, and the second ends in a different barrier a few kilometres further on. At almost 21 km, with blind crests, camber changes and roughly 300 metres of elevation change, it is too long to memorise the way you learn Monza or Spa.

This Nordschleife sim racing guide is about getting to clean, repeatable laps rather than a hero time. It works in iRacing, Assetto Corsa, Assetto Corsa Competizione and Gran Turismo 7, with small differences in how each sim models the bumps.

Why a Nordschleife sim racing guide needs a different method

On a normal circuit you can drive ten laps in 20 minutes and build muscle memory. On the Nordschleife ten laps in a GT car take well over an hour, and one mistake throws away eight minutes of work. The usual advice of "just do laps" is slow and frustrating here.

The better approach is to break the lap into sections and learn them like separate short tracks. Our general guide to learning a new track layout faster explains the method. Here it is applied to the Ring.

Pick a slow car first

Start in something with around 150 to 200 horsepower, such as a Mazda MX-5 or Toyota GR86. At lower speeds you have time to look ahead, the crests do not launch you, and you learn the shape of the road instead of fighting the car. Move to a GT4 after you can do three clean laps in a row, and only then to a GT3.

The lap in five sections

These splits are not official sectors. They are natural breaks where the track changes character, which makes them easy chunks to practise one at a time.

SectionFrom and toCharacter
1Start to SchwedenkreuzFast, flowing, two big crests
2Aremberg to Adenauer ForstDownhill compression, then tight chicane
3Metzgesfeld to BergwerkTechnical, narrow, many slow corners
4Kesselchen to BrunnchenLong climb, Karussell, high-speed kinks
5Pflanzgarten to the finishJumps, then the long Dottinger Hohe straight

The corners that decide a clean lap

Hatzenbach

The first sequence of left-right flicks after the start. Do not attack it. Stay a car width from the inside kerbs, because the surface drops off sharply and the kerbs unsettle the car on most sims. Losing half a second here is nothing compared to spinning on lap one.

Flugplatz

A crest followed by a fast right. The car goes light over the top, so finish your braking before the crest and turn only once all four wheels are back on the road. In a GT3, a short lift is usually enough. If you crash here every lap, you are turning while airborne.

Fuchsrohre and Adenauer Forst

Fuchsrohre is a flat-out downhill plunge into a compression and back uphill. Keep the wheel straight at the bottom. Then comes the biggest braking zone in the early part of the lap, into the Adenauer Forst chicane. Brake early, at about the 200 metre board in a GT3, and take the second apex conservatively. Running wide here puts you on grass with no grip.

Bergwerk

A slow, tightening right-hander at the end of a fast downhill run. Exit speed matters enormously, because a long climb through Kesselchen follows. Sacrifice entry for a clean exit and early throttle.

Caracciola-Karussell

The famous banked concrete hairpin. Aim for the left edge of the concrete as you come over the crest, drop the inside wheels in, and keep a steady throttle through the banking. In sims the bump at the exit can kick the car, so ease off the steering lock before you climb out.

Pflanzgarten and Schwalbenschwanz

Pflanzgarten has two jumps. Land straight and avoid braking while airborne. Schwalbenschwanz is a double left that rewards patience: one smooth arc instead of two jabs at the wheel.

Practice plan for your first week

  1. Day 1: One slow lap at 80 percent pace, just to see the whole layout. Use the racing line aid if your sim offers it.
  2. Days 2 and 3: Sections 1 and 2 only. In sims that allow replays or restarts from a point, restart at the start of each section. Ten runs of each.
  3. Days 4 and 5: Sections 3 and 4, same method.
  4. Day 6: Section 5, then three full laps aiming for zero offs.
  5. Day 7: Full laps with telemetry running, comparing your slowest section against a reference lap.

Thirty to forty minutes a day is enough. Longer sessions on the Ring make you tired, and tired drivers crash on crests.

Why you should ignore the braking-point videos at first

A lot of Nordschleife content tells you to memorise braking markers: brake at this sign, turn at that tree. It looks efficient, and for a fast driver refining a lap it is useful. For a beginner, I think it is the wrong way round.

Braking points depend on your car, your setup, your tyres and your fuel load. A marker that works for a GT3 on fresh tyres will put an MX-5 driver into Adenauer Forst far too early and a GT3 driver on worn tyres far too late. If you learn a list of markers, every change of car means relearning the list.

Learn the road first: where it crests, which way the camber falls, where the corners tighten. Once you know the shape, finding your own braking point for any car takes two or three laps. The markers are a finishing tool, not a learning tool.

Setup matters less than you think at this stage too. Raise the ride height a few millimetres and soften the rebound slightly to cope with the bumps, and leave the rest at default.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to learn the Nordschleife in a sim?

Most sim racers can do a clean lap after two to four hours of focused practice in a slow car. Getting within a few percent of a good reference time usually takes 15 to 30 hours. Practising in sections speeds this up a lot compared to only running full laps.

What is the best car to learn the Nordschleife in?

A low-power road car like a Mazda MX-5 or Toyota GR86 is ideal, because the slower speeds give you time to learn the crests and corners. Step up to GT4 and then GT3 once you can string together three clean laps. Starting in a GT3 makes every mistake far more costly.

Which sim has the most accurate Nordschleife?

iRacing and Assetto Corsa Competizione both use laser-scanned versions that capture the bumps closely, and the original Assetto Corsa version remains popular. Gran Turismo 7 offers a smoother but still faithful layout. Any of them is fine for learning the corners, which carry over between sims.
