Balance of Performance in GT Racing Explained Simply

At a GT3 race you can watch a Porsche 911, a Ferrari 296, a BMW M4 and a Lamborghini Huracan finish within a second of each other after three hours.

At a GT3 race you can watch a Porsche 911, a Ferrari 296, a BMW M4 and a Lamborghini Huracan finish within a second of each other after three hours. Those cars have different engine layouts, different weights and wildly different road prices. On their own they would never be that close. They are close because a technical team has spent the week adding kilos to some, trimming power from others and adjusting fuel loads for all of them.

That process is called balance of performance, usually shortened to BoP, and it shapes almost every GT and endurance series you can watch today. It also drives some of the angriest arguments in motorsport. Here is what balance of performance actually adjusts, how the numbers are chosen and why teams spend so much energy trying to look slower than they are.

Why Balance of Performance Exists at All

In a spec series, everyone drives the same car. Formula 2 and many one make cup championships work that way. GT racing is the opposite. Manufacturers build their own race car based on a road model, and they want to win with something that looks like the car in their showroom.

Without a leveller, the series would be won by whichever brand spent the most or happened to have the best base car. Other manufacturers would leave, grids would shrink and customer teams paying for these cars would have no reason to buy a slower model. BoP is the compromise that keeps eight or ten makes on the same grid, each with a realistic chance on its day.

What Gets Adjusted

Organisers have several levers, and most series use a mix of them:

LeverHow it worksEffect on track
Minimum weightBallast is bolted low in the carSlower acceleration and braking, more tyre wear
Engine powerAir restrictors, turbo boost limits or a power capLower top speed and slower exits
Fuel capacitySmaller tank or a restrictor on refuellingShorter stints or longer pit stops
Ride height and aeroLimits on wing angle or minimum ride heightLess cornering grip

Weight is the most visible change, and teams often quote it, but power and fuel are where most of the real balancing happens. A car that is 5 kilometres per hour slower at the end of a long straight can lose more time than 20 kilograms of ballast would cost it.

How Organisers Pick the Numbers

The process differs by series, but the main ingredients are similar. Cars are tested in a wind tunnel and on a dyno before they are homologated, giving a baseline. During the season, every car carries data loggers, and in some championships torque sensors on the drive shafts that report actual power output in real time.

After each event the technical team compares lap times, sector times, top speeds and stint averages. They usually look at the best laps from each make rather than a single fast lap, to filter out traffic and driver differences. Then they publish a revised table ahead of the next round, sometimes only days before practice begins.

Big races are a special case. Le Mans and the Nurburgring 24 Hours often get their own BoP, because the long straights and unusual corners favour different car types than a typical circuit.

Sandbagging and the Game Behind the Game

Once teams know that a fast car gets slowed down, every incentive points towards hiding speed. This is called sandbagging. A team might run heavy fuel loads in practice, lift early on straights, or stay mid pack in a race they could have won, so the next BoP table treats them kindly.

Organisers fight back in a few ways. Torque sensors make it harder to hide engine power. Some series weight their calculations towards race pace rather than qualifying. Others lock BoP for several events so there is little to gain from playing games in one race. None of it is perfect, which is why fans often read BoP announcements more closely than the race results.

The Case Against Blaming BoP for Every Result

The common fan reaction is that a team won because of BoP and lost because of BoP. Sometimes that is fair. Most of the time it is too easy.

BoP only targets the cars, not the operation. It cannot equalise a two second pit stop advantage, a driver who saves fuel better in traffic, a strategist who calls a safety car perfectly or a crew whose tyre pressures are right in the cool of the night. In endurance racing those details add up to minutes. Watch how a strong crew handles driver changes in endurance racing and you will see time won and lost that no BoP table touches.

A fair rule of thumb: if the same car wins every race by a wide margin, look at BoP. If results move between makes and the winners also had clean pit work and sharp strategy, the leveller is doing its job.

What This Means for Sim Racers

Most GT and endurance titles apply BoP too, and the online leagues often add their own. That matters when you choose a car. The fastest car in last month's league may be slower this month after a patch.

  • Check the latest BoP notes for your title before buying or committing to a car for a season.
  • Pick a car you drive consistently over the one topping the lap charts. Consistency survives BoP changes; a small pace edge does not.
  • In multi class leagues, note fuel capacity changes. They can turn a two stop race into a three stop race.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Formula 1 use balance of performance?

No. Formula 1 teams build their own cars under strict technical rules, and the fastest design is allowed to win. Cost caps and wind tunnel time limits narrow the gap, but they are not BoP.

Which series rely on BoP most?

GT3 championships worldwide, the top class at Le Mans and in the World Endurance Championship, and IMSA in North America all use it heavily. Touring car series often use a version based on success ballast.

Is success ballast the same thing?

Not quite. Success ballast adds weight to a specific car based on its championship points. BoP adjusts a whole model, whoever is driving it.

Watch the Table Before the Race

Next time you plan to follow an endurance round, read the published BoP table the day before. Note which makes gained weight or lost power, then see how they qualify. It turns the weekend into a puzzle you can follow, and it pairs well with our guide on how to follow a motorsport weekend without getting lost. You will understand the result long before the commentators explain it.
